Activity 1: The First Settlers- Summer learning journey

Activity 2: Setting Sail

Dear Paris I am writing this to tell you about my journey to this beautiful land of aotearoa. When I first set off on our journey I was full of excitement and could hardly sit still on the waka, but soon after, that feeling quickly changed as we came across massive waves that seemed like mountains that our poor waka had to fight through, and if that wasn't enough I was sea sick which made me want to go home. But luckily everyone helped me through it and i soon returned to the excitement that I first felt. The waves subsided and calm ocean made me appreciate its beauty. A whole lot of funny creature’s surrounded our waka at times some looking friendly and some hoping we would fall into the water so they could eat us. The days seemed to never end and it felt as if we weren't going to see land ever again, and be stuck out at sea eating fish for the rest of our lives. Then when I thought here we go again another day of fish, and open ocean their it was the beautifullest thing I had ever seen. Golden sand leading into a beautiful green forest with a stunning waterfall flowing off the biggest mountain I had ever seen. As we hopped off the waka the sounds of birds, and insects greeted us like they had been waiting for us to arrive.

The first settlers to come to New Zealand must have been really brave! They had to leave their original homes and sail thousands of miles across the ocean on a special boat called a ‘waka’ to reach New Zealand.

Imagine that you were on board one of the wakas. On your blog, write a short letter to a friend telling them about your voyage to New Zealand. In the letter be sure to tell them how you feel about moving to a new country. If it was me, I would have felt really nervous…

  1. Hi Payton,

My name's Ruby and I'm one of the people who will be blogging with you this summer as part of the Summer Learning Journey. It's great to see that you've started working on these activities! Well done!

What a great letter! You've done a great job here. It's great how you've used descriptive language to tell us about your journey. The settlers also would have been feeling a large amount of excitement while they were heading out to find a new land.

Have you ever been on a boat before? I have been on one a few times but I get really sea sick so I never enjoy it very much and always look forward to getting off!

I look forward to reading more of your blog over the summer.
    Cheers,
    Ruby.

  4. Kia Ora Payton,

What an incredible and detailed letter you have written to your friend Paris. I think this has to be my favourite letter in the programme so far! The descriptive words you have used to explain your journey is very impressive.

My favourite sentence would have to be “Golden sand leading into a beautiful green forest with a stunning waterfall flowing off the biggest mountain I had ever seen”. I love the way you have described seeing New Zealand for the first time, I’m sure anyone, after reading your letter would love to visit our country.

Do you normally get sea sick? I’m currently on a plane travelling to Queenstown and feeling a little bit sick! The lovely flight attendants just handed out cookies and water, so I’m hoping they will settle my tummy. Have you been to Queenstown? It’s my first time visiting and I am so excited, I’ve heard that it is one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand. I don’t think it can beat the beauty of Northland though.
